In some ways, the fact that Blend is open at all is a success story.

Blend offers a tapas menu in the lounge, above. On executive chef Bruce Nubile's dinner menu, two appetizers of note are the grilled chicken arepa, right, and dumplings stuffed with crimini, porcini and shiitake mushrooms. On the dessert menu, flourless chocolate cake is a standout.

The popular nightspot on Chestnut Street in Ridgewood abruptly declared bankruptcy and closed last year amid a mess of unpaid taxes and millions owed to creditors. It eventually emerged with a pair of new owners, Zvia Barlev, owner of the nearby La Piazza restaurant, and landlord Edward Sullivan. Both pledged to keep Blend's name and enhance its reputation as a bar, lounge and restaurant.

In June, the 14,000-square-foot facility reopened with a facelift. Its restaurant and lounge were reversed, so that the lounge is now the dim, spacious spot that you walk through to get to the more intimate restaurant (there also is a rear entrance into the adjacent back bar). You can choose from a sassy cocktail list with drinks called the Desperate Housewife, the Cougarita and the Ridgewood Express. And your dinner is under the direction of executive chef Bruce Nubile, who was the executive chef of the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn and Legends Steakhouse in Midland Park, as well as a veteran of such big local names as Café Panache, the River Palm Terrace and Valentino's.

The Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce will kick off the 24th annual Downtown for the Holidays celebration in the village's Central Business District (CBD) next Friday. The celebration is held each year to promote downtown businesses and entertain village residents and visitors.

I'm going to be at the BF HSA meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) night -- along with Dr. Fishbein (Superintendent), Mr. DeSimone (Business Administrator) and Board members Joseph Vallerini and Bob Hutton -- to discuss the upcoming Bond Referendum and answer questions.

Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger – What a great guy!!

Sara Triggs of Madison got lost on her way to Ridgewood on Tuesday, but managed to be first on line to meet Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger at Bookends, and have the pilot of US Airways flight 1549 sign a copy of his new autobiography.

“He’s everything that’s good about the United States,” said Triggs, a mother of two.

The crowd waiting for Sullenberger had grown to more than 140 by the time the hero pilot arrived. He was met with a standing ovation and a few tears as people remembered his safe landing of the crippled plane in the frigid Hudson River in January, saving all 155 aboard the plane.

Sullenberger said before the signing that he had made a decision “to make as much good come of this notoriety in as many ways and as long” as he could. That includes being an advocate for aviation safety and charities he has been involved with for years.

A NJ Transit employee was killed this morning in Bergen County after he was struck by a train, a transit spokeswoman said. Simplicio Nino, of Clifton, was fatally struck while he stood on the tracks east of the Ridgewood Station about 8:15 a.m., said NJ Transit spokeswoman Penny Bassett Hackett. Nino, 58, was a welder with 36 years of railroad experience, she said. The train carrying 20 passengers from Hoboken was en route to Suffern, N.Y., where it was scheduled to arrive at 8:43 a.m. All of the riders transferred to another train at about 10 a.m.

An effort to replace an 80-year-old natural swimming hole with a concrete pool has led to a nasty battle between those who bemoan "suburban sterility" and others looking for a more practical alternative, according to a report in The New York Times.

After three years of study, the village task force decided to dig up Graydon Pool and replace it with a blue concrete pool, a move that has led to the creation of a group called Preserve Graydon Coalition, which wants to keep the idyllic throwback, according to the paper.

When she was growing up in Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J., in the 1980s, Melinda Cronk and her friends envied the kids in nearby Ridgewood for one simple reason — Graydon Pool, the languorous green park and 2.6-acre natural swimming hole that was Ridgewood’s blissful monument to suburban summers.

In the year before the 100th anniversary of the park — the pool was established in 1929 — it’s easy to see why. With its sandy beach, its fieldstone walls and particularly its sand-bottom swimming hole filled with 3.8 million gallons of spring water, Graydon seems like an idyllic throwback to a less hurried version of suburban life.

Ms. Cronk still thinks of Graydon as a magical place. But, alas, she no longer thinks it’s a practical one. She lives in Ridgewood but does not pay the modest dues to join Graydon. And, after three years of study, the village task force she heads has decided that the only way to save Graydon is to plow it under and replace it with a more familiar symbol of summer, a blue concrete pool.

In a slumping economy, many North Jersey swim clubs have just about managed to stay afloat.

With summer unofficially ending this weekend, swim clubs in Ridgewood, Paramus, Fairfield, Hasbrouck Heights, Bogota, Westwood, Ringwood and Washington Township report they have lost substantial numbers of members this year.

Many of the clubs are holding off on expensive repairs. Others are allowing residents of other towns to join as associate members or to use the pool for daily fees, an unthinkable concept in richer times.

It was not by happenstance that the YWCA of Bergen County chose Hackensack as the location for its administrative offices two years ago.

Created by a merger of the Y's in Ridgewood and Hackensack in 1991, the countywide organization didn't want to convey an image of an agency that focused on the wealthier northern suburbs of the county.

Its administrative staff had been split between offices in Ridgewood and rented space in Glen Rock, while the Y-run county Rape Crisis Center was in a building on Essex Street in Hackensack.

Graydon Pool program for Paterson youth continues in honor of co-founder

The Ridgewood community has worked with Paterson’s Community Association with a Ministry for People Youth Development Program (CAMP-YDP) for many years to provide a fresh air and fun suburban pool experience. For more than five years, the Ridgewood YMCA has provided free swimming lessons to the children. The Parks Department worked with the "Y" to bring in professional swim instructors, Bigos said. Ridgewood YMCA Aquatics Director Susan Ludzki said the organization chose to participate because it wanted to "provide an opportunity that in general they [the Paterson children] couldn't afford."

The Y's (Ridgewood YMCA and YWCA of Bergen County) celebrated the Grand Opening of their jointly-owned and newly renovated Oak Street facility with a very well attended tour and day full of activities. There are many pictures of the friends and families in the community attending this event.

I just had my installation done yesterday, and I can say "job well done". I've have the fiber delivered data service for over a year, and I jumped on the offer to get away from Cablevision. The picture quality is very good, better than before, and I am getting a lot more channles for slightly less than what I was paying the cable company.

A number of updates to goridgewood.com have been made (and are still underway). One thing to notice are the pictures on several of the pages (home page, sports, faith). These are Flickr badges and I have been testing out other Web 2.0 features like del.icio.us. Let me know what you think, because I am not sure what will stick around or be pulled down.
